Hey, {{first_name | Fam}}!

I honestly didn't think I was gonna have the energy to write this week's newsletter. I just got back from Bermuda for carnival and I was doing the most! If you've seen my Instagram stories, then you know I was outside throwing my behind in a circle and having a time! And let me tell you, there are probably a few videos of me out there that should never see the light of day, ha!

But the fete must go on!

Now, when I whinin my waist, I was learning a lot about the island. I really only associated Bermuda with the Bermuda Triangle lore, but there is actually a lot of history I didn't know about.

Like…

  • Bermuda was one of the earliest British colonies to adopt the practice of slavery.

  • The first Black man elected to the U.S. House of Representatives actually got his start in Bermuda. He escaped there during the Civil War, opened a barbershop, picked up a bunch of political tea, and brought it back to the U.S., where he was elected to Congress. (video coming soon)

  • Some enslaved people from the U.S. gained their freedom in Bermuda when American ships were blown off course into British waters.

  • There's no fresh water on the island of Bermuda (no lakes, no streams), so most of their water comes from rain they catch via mechanisms built into their roofs.

You can shake πŸ‘ AND learn. I love duality. Make sure you're following me on Instagram. I have great content coming.

Thoughtfully,
Nicole

Unserious Thought

I just remembered the time I ordered a β€œmargarita” in Italy and was confused when they brought me a pizza.
